Weekend Update, like so much of Saturday Night Live, has been less funny in recent years. It has also been more political, more predictable, and much more conventional–or at least what passes for conventional in an organic, locally-owned coffee shop for millennials in Brooklyn. Nothing to offend Lena Dunham or anyone majoring in Gender and Critical Race Studies at Wesleyan.
Last week on SNL’s Update, Colin Jost interrupted the relentless attacks on the election winners to insert a mild joke about Tinder.
What he didn’t expect was….political backlash for saying something to Offend Those Who Must Not Be Offended (OTWMNBO).
There are several interesting points about this post: “[email protected] Jost, do you not get this kind of hatred is why trump won the election? Shame. Shame. shame. shame.”
Let me mention a few. I am
- Impressed that 3 “shames” were completely inadequate. 4 were necessary;
- Impressed the Tweeter’s has chosen the name “pwr bttm” (= power bottom)
- Intrigued that nearly 2 thousand people love this sentiment and nearly 500 have retweeted it.
- Mightily impressed that Power Bottom has over 20,000 Twitter followers and himself tweeted over 11,000 times, a pretty clear indication that his day job is not too time consuming
The episode is another reminder of why Jerry Seinfeld and other comedians are now avoiding college campuses. What the rest of us consider humor might could easily melt the Political Snowflakes and Social Justice Vigilantes.
Shame. Shame. Shame. Shame. Shame. (You see what I did there? I out-shamed them.)
